South Korea's Moon orders maximum retaliatory measures over North Korea

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe speaks during a press conference after he reshuffled his Cabinet at the prime minister's official residence in Tokyo

North Korea put on an extraordinary two-part show of its nuclear ambitions Sunday, releasing photos of leader Kim Jong Un next to what it described as a H-bomb for an ICBM, then actually detonating a device in its sixth and by far most powerful nuclear test to date.

South Korea's weather agency says an apparent nuclear test by North Korea appears to have been several times stronger than its previous test.

Sky News' Asia Correspondent, Katie Stallard, said: "The significant point to take out of all of this is in terms of what response we see from the United States".

The top national security advisers to Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in discussed the test by phone, according to Moon's office.

The U.S Geological Survey said the quake was detected at 12:36 p.m. Sunday local time, near North Korea's known nuclear test site in Punggye-ri, in the county's northeast region.

US President Donald Trump has labelled North Korea "an embarrassment".

Separately, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said Pyongyang's latest test "means that we have to find a level-headed but clear answer".

"South Korea is finding, as I have told them, that their talk of appeasement with North Korea will not work, they only understand one thing!"

"If China completely cuts off the supply of oil to North Korea or even closes the China-North Korea border, it is uncertain whether we can deter Pyongyang from conducting further nuclear tests and missile launches".

The photos released earlier Sunday showed Kim talking with his lieutenants as he observed a silver, peanut-shaped device that the state-run media said was a thermonuclear weapon created to be mounted on the North's "Hwasong-14" ICBM. Experts said North Korea may have tested a "boosted" atomic bomb.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called the test "absolutely unacceptable".

Trump's administration has sought to pressure China into cutting off food and fuel to North Korea, while warning that all options are on the table to stop Kim.

The North has given the ultimate demonstration of its power by testing an H-bomb, Cha Du-Hyeogn of Asan Institute of Policy Studies said, and wanted the U.S. to believe its claims.

North Korea further raised regional tensions on Tuesday by launching an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan, drawing worldwide condemnation.

The apparent test came just hours after North Korea claimed that its leader has inspected the loading of a hydrogen bomb into a new intercontinental ballistic missile.

Some experts think the North may have mastered this technology.

Pyongyang's favourite newsreader - a woman in her 70s - returned to the airwaves Sunday to declare its proud possession of a hydrogen bomb.

On Tuesday, the North fired a mid-range ballistic missile that flew over Japan - a test considered one of the most provocative ever by the isolated communist state.

People in Seoul watch a TV news report about a possible nuclear test conducted by North Korea.

North Korea itself has long said it is open to dialogue, but will not abandon its nuclear aspirations unless the United States abandons what Pyongyang considers a "hostile policy" against it.

Earlier on Sunday, photos released by the North Korean government showed Kim talking with his lieutenants as he observed a device that was apparently the thermonuclear weapon destined for an ICBM.

Pyongyang said it had tested a hydrogen bomb - a device many times more powerful than an atomic bomb.

Kim, according to the statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency, claimed that "all components of the H-bomb were homemade. thus enabling the country to produce powerful nuclear weapons as many as it wants".

It has defied United Nations sanctions and global pressure to develop nuclear weapons and to test missiles which could potentially reach the mainland US.

A news reader called the test a "complete success" and said the "two-stage thermonuclear weapon" had "unprecedented" strength.
