Russia and USA to build space station in Moon's orbit

Russian Federation and the United States will lead an worldwide coalition to build a space station to orbit the moon sometime in the 2020s, according to multiple reports.

The program is called the Deep Space Gateway, and that's exactly what the yet-to-be-built space station will act as.

Following in the footsteps of the International Space Station, the moon ship would be open to astronauts and cosmonauts from around the world.

NASA says the project, known as the Deep Space Gateway, would serve as "a gateway to deep space and the lunar surface".

Such a space station would orbit the Moon and allow for an environment to prepare for crewed missions deeper into space than those attempted before. The partnership will also help to develop worldwide standards for technical systems that would allow other countries to build compatible spacecraft, opening up the station to visitors from many developed nations. "This plan challenges our current capabilities in human spaceflight and will benefit from engagement by multiple countries and US industry", NASA officials said in a statement. That mission, which would see astronauts orbiting the planet rather than actually touching down, is still being conceptualized.

The official was speaking on the sidelines of the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, Australia on Wednesday.

Igor Komarov explained the first stage will centre around building the orbital area of the space station.

While there are political tensions between the USA and Russian Federation, they have worked together in space exploration, including on the International Space Station (ISS).

Acting NASA administrator Robert Lightfoot said Wednesday, "NASA is pleased to see growing global interest in moving into cislunar space as the next step for advancing human space exploration".

"For those destinations farther into the solar system, including Mars, Nasa envisions a deep space transport spacecraft". "To avoid future problems over technical cooperation, part of the standards should be unified - for a possibility for various countries to work on their craft and dock to the worldwide lunar station", Komarov was quoted as saying in the statement.

"We understand that we are key players and we have to work on these missions together", Komarov said.

Experts hailed the announcement as a symbolic beginning of US-Russian joint work on deep space exploration.
