Providence saw slight uptick in crime in 2016

Crime in 2017: A Preliminary Analysis | Brennan Center for Justice

The estimated number of violent crimes in the US increased in 2016 for the second straight year, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation data released today.

In 2016, there were 72,787 crimes reported (of the ones tracked by the FBI), Lawlor said.

Across the USA, the homicide rate also increased by 7.9 percent in 2016, marking an overall jump of more than 20 percent since 2014, the report said.

The number of burglaries in 2016 was 1,486 - an increase of 183 incidents, or 14 percent.

"For the sake of all Americans, we must confront and turn back the rising tide of violent crime", Sessions said in a statement on Monday.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been insisting that last year's crime increase was not a blip.

Sgt. Shaun Hampton, a Sacramento sheriff's spokesman, said the declines may be due to new data-driven strategies the department has implemented in recent months that use crime reports and 911 calls to identify where deputies should patrol. Overall, total violent crimes were up 4.1 percent.

Chicago alone has been responsible for more than half the increase in the murder rate in the nation's 30 largest cities, according to the Brennan Center's analysis. In 2005 and 2006, the USA also experienced a similar two-year rise in violent crime.

There was no national pattern in violence in 2016: New York City saw historic or close to historic lows in shootings and murders, as murders in Chicago spiked. "So in other words", Pfaff said, "five neighborhoods in Chicago explain 10 percent of the national increase in homicide rates".

The report also included race and ethnicity data about those arrested in 2016. The homicide rate increased 7.9%.

The group's data included cities with dramatic increases, such as Chicago, which had 762 homicides in 2016, up from 482 homicides a year earlier; Phoenix, which saw 146 homicides, up from 113 the year before; and Louisville, which had 117 homicides, up from 80 in 2015. Cities including Portland and Minneapolis reported fewer homicides a year ago as well.

In 2016, a total of 17,250 people were murdered, according to law enforcement data. The FBI reported that past year, 435 people were killed in justifiable homicides by law enforcement officers.

At the same time, violent crimes fell by more than 10 percent in Washington, D.C., and by significant percentages in Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco and Detroit.

The report says there were 579 rapes and 9,882 aggravated assaults.
