Delta to offer FREE Wi-Fi text messaging on all flights

This offering is probably a nice marketing play which should win Delta some fans

Customers will be able to access free messaging through Delta's Wi-Fi portal page, the airline said.

Delta flights worldwide will have free texting through a Gogo app, starting Sunday.

U.S. carrier Delta is to offer free in-flight messaging via What's App and Facebook Messenger from the start of October.

Gogo is a popular in-flight internet and entertainment service used by airlines.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian made the big announcement on "CBS This Morning" on Wednesday. Alaska Airlines customers have had access to free in-flight messaging on its Wi-Fi enabled aircraft since January. "We want our customers while they're flying to stay connected to their homes, to their friends". The airline didn't specifically mention it would support standard text messages - also known as SMS messages - which means customers will need to use one of the aforementioned platforms. Well, texters worry no more... at least if you travel with Delta Air Lines.

Delta passengers can message via iMessage, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Bastian joined Delta in 1998 and took over as chief executive officer in May previous year.

Delta says the move is the first by a US global carrier.

The company does warn that photos, videos, and SMS messages cannot be sent and that sending a message may take longer than usual.
