BIG will design massive Mars simulation city in the United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced plans to build a 1.9-million-square-foot city that will simulate conditions for humans living on Mars.

Data from the probe and Mars Science City will support the UAE's long term goal of establishing a city on Mars by 2117.

The MSC project, designed by architect Bjarke Ingels, will cost $140 million and become a "viable and realistic model", according to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. The $136 million (Dh500 million) facility will cover almost 177,000 square meters (1.9 million square feet) of the desert.

Once completed, the Mars Science city will be the largest simulated off-world environment ever constructed and will feature laboratories for food, energy and water research and development projects as well as extraterrestrial agricultural testing.

Also inside the dome will be a museum dedicated to mankind's achievements in space. It should be noted the walls of the museum will be 3D printed using sand from the nearby Emirati desert.

Sheikh Mohammed also hailed UAE nationals for their efforts towards this success.

The 100 year plan, the Mars 2117 Project, was announced in February this year.

"The new project is another step in the UAE's leading contributions to the global science movement; we seek to set an example and motivation for others to participate, and contribute, to humanity's march into space", he concluded.

In addition to research on Earth, the Emirates Mars Mission is working towards launching the Hope spacecraft in 2020.

Expected to be the "most sophisticated building in the world", laboratories will simulate the Mars' harsh environment by making use of 3D printing technology, as well as heat and radiation insulation.

The Mars Science City project falls within the UAE's objectives to lead the global scientific race to take people to Mars. The prospect of having an entire city meant to train colonists of what living on Mars will be like by 2117 certainly seems interesting, especially given that it would be right around this time that the first group of SpaceX colonists will likely arrive and establish a habitable environment.
