Airports Worldwide See Delays After Booking System Crash

Global airports systems crash meltdown gatwick washington paris charles de gaulle

Passengers at airports across the world facing chaos as computer check-in systems crashed.

Passengers have reported problems at London Gatwick and Heathrow, as well as in Paris, Washington DC and Melbourne.

London's Gatwick Airport blamed Altea, a passenger management system that underpins booking systems and is made by Spanish software company Amadeus, for the problems.

Multiple airlines using the Amadeus reservation system told The Register that passenger check-in and/or airline booking systems went offline around 10.30 GMT (0930 UTC) for between about five to 15 minutes.

Southwest Airlines's and British Airways's support page was particularly busy. "As a result of the incident, customers experienced disruption to certain services", a company spokesperson said in a statement emailed to NPR.

"Altea" software which is used by 125 airlines is responsible for the problem.

Amadeus said that all systems were working normally by 9:30 am ET.

The airport said a few airlines were affected by the outage, but thankfully no long-term issues were created as it only lasted a few minutes.

A spokesman for Gatwick airport said just "a couple" of its airlines were affected - without identifying which - and that the systems were only down for a couple of minutes before being resolved.

Changi Airport, in a Facebook post, explained that the check-in procedure may take longer as manual boarding passes had to be issued to travellers.

An Amadeus spokesperson said that action was ongoing with al services gradually coming back online. "We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause".
