Trump's response to white supremacist violence not enough

President Donald Trump speaks to the media in the lobby of Trump Tower Tuesday Aug. 15 2017 in New York

In a flurry of tweets, Trump also defended the presence of Confederate monuments.

Two men who say there are great-great grandsons of Stonewall Jackson have published an open letter asking the Richmond mayor to remove a statue to their forefather in the town.

When asked what his opinion on Trump's impact on the United States is, T.I. was quick to state that he was not at all surprised by the fact that the president took his critique of the white supremacist and neo-Nazi protesters back so fast.

Historians note that there are two peak periods of Confederate monument building in the United states: one between 1890 and 1920, as Jim Crow was being established and the power of the KKK was at its zenith, and again during the civil rights era of the 1950s and 1960s. "I have no problems with that", Lee said.

It shouldn't have been surprising that Trump immediately received criticism from both Republicans and Democrats for attributing the violence to "many sides", (a line that ABC News and Politico have since reported was ad-libbed) rather than coming down hard on the neo-Nazis, Klansman and other white supremacists who incited the violence. Trump's tweet mentioning the country's first and third presidents, Washington and Jefferson, was the second time this week that he questioned to what extent those wishing to eradicate memory of slavery would attempt to erase history from the public square.

It's a sentiment echoed by Trump, who tweeted this about the statues: "Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our attractive statues and monuments".

President Donald Trump said he has no regrets for his comments about the events in Charlottesville.

Amid calls for the toppling of confederate statues, several cities continue to plan the removal of symbols honoring figures in America's history of racism.

"And Theresa May can not remain silent while the US President refuses categorically to denounce white supremacists and neo-Nazi violence". Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Mississippi, South Carolina and Alabama each have more than 100 Confederate symbols each.

"In Charlottesville, the blame lay squarely on the KKK and white supremacists", the leader of the Republican National Committee, Ronna Romney McDaniel, told ABC News.

He said: "We all have a responsibility to condemn racism in the strongest terms wherever it rears its ugly head". Counterprotesters gathered to oppose the white nationalists' rally, and some members on both sides fought.

There was more agreement across the board on the question of whether the neo-Nazi driving the auto that killed 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injured 19 more committed an act of domestic terrorism.

The Confederate flag was removed from the South Carolina State House in 2015 after a racially based shooting in a Charleston church.

"You can't put today's morals on people who lived centuries ago", he said. Some also said that continuing to have statues dedicated to the Confederacy is a painful reminder of white supremacy, and keeping them in place continues that legacy.

In response, May criticised the remarks but stopped short of personally criticising Trump, which prompted accusations she had "the moral fibre of a slug and and the sycophancy of a hyena". Instead, he went out of his way Tuesday to insist there were good "very fine people" marching in Charlottesville last weekend.
