Prosecutors seek 12 years' jail for Samsung heir

Mr Lee has been accused of bribing an associate of former South Korean president Park Guen-hye in return for government support for a restructuring of the company. They sought terms ranging from seven years to ten years for the other accused.

Lee has denied all charges and distanced himself from Samsung's now-disbanded secretive strategy office that oversaw the merger at the center of the scandal.

It's being reported today that prosecutors have demanded 12 years in prison for the Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics Lee Jae-yong for allegedly bribing former President Park Geun-hye and her confidante Choi Soon-sil in the corruption scandal that brought down the previous administration.

The verdicts are expected later this month.

Special Prosecutor Park Young-soo, who heads the investigation, told the court: "It is a typical corruption crime stemming from a back-scratching alliance between politics and business, which has indeed compromised our constitutional values".

Samsung did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Jay Y. Lee's lawyers argued that his so-called overarching intention of cementing ownership control was "a fictional construct" made up by prosecutors, with moves such as the merger of two Samsung affiliates in 2015 aimed merely at ensuring survival and growth of individual companies.

Lee is scheduled to be released in late August unless he's convicted and receives a prison sentence.

Taking the stand for the first time in his defense last week, Lee claimed that he had no role in decision-making at the wider Samsung group and "mostly listened to other executives".

Police said Monday they raided a management office for central Seoul residences of Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee and his relatives over the suspected transfer of corporate money to their remodeling expenses.
