Mysterious sea creatures that 'ate' teen identified

Sam Kanizay's wounds were still seeping blood on Sunday 18 hours after he emerged from the water

St Kilda players were advised not to go to the beach following reports of a 16-year-old boy leaving the water with his legs covered in blood.

Sam's father has since posted a sickening video of the creatures - scooped out of the water with a net and believed to be sea lice - feasting on chunks of raw meat.

"As soon as we wiped [his legs] down, they kept bleeding", father Jarrod Kanizay said.

The pair thought it was sea lice - marine parasites that feed on fish.

"It sort of looked like hundreds of little pinholes or pin-sized bites distributed all over my ankle and the top of my foot".

Sam Kanizay, speaking from a hospital bed, told local media he went waist-deep into the ocean at Brighton Beach in Melbourne after playing soccer, and emerged 30 minutes later to find his knee and ankles bleeding profusely. Keough also said the Australian teenager may have been cold from being in the Brighton ocean water and may not have noticed numerous little bites being made into his flesh, at first.

However, Associate Professor at Monash University's School of Biological Sciences Richard Reina is confident Sam's bites were caused by sea lice.

"There was a massive pool of blood on the floor".

"I collected these odd creatures from the same spot last night by trapping them in a net and standing in the water myself", he said.

"I didn't really know what to think of it", he said.

"My dad gave me this amusing stare and I gave him a stare because we both just had no clue what was going on", Sam said.

He was given antibiotics, and later taken to a different hospital for further tests, but his legs continued to bleed into the early hours of Sunday.

'They're mite type creatures.

Kanizay went back to the beach with a pool net full of meaty bait to attract the creatures, and filmed them.

"They are not there for us to eat, but it may happen that they are trying to help themselves to a few, such as mosquitoes, leeches, or other species present in the nature", he told AFP.

He went to hospital, were staff were baffled by the injuries.

"No one knows what the creatures are". "It was just unlucky", said marine biologist Genefor Walker-Smith.

Their size ranges from half a centimetre to 1cm and they are usually found in shallows and leave an itchy sensation if they come in contact with a person.
