Jaguars place LT Branden Albert on reserve/retired list

Jaguars Leonard Fournette is a 'beast,' says Fred Taylor

Albert skipped most of the Jaguars' offseason program while lobbying for a new contract, and trained in South Florida. The Dolphins were planning to release Albert before the Jaguars expressed interest in trading for him. The Jags aren't exactly racing across the beach of the First Coast to embrace their once presumptive left tackle - at least not yet.

Now the Jaguars are in MA for a pair of joint practices with New England and a spokesperson for the team said Jacksonville would not make a comment related to the situation.

However, if Albert is going to have one foot in and the other out the door, simply showing up for the paycheck, Jacksonville will probably take its time while trying to ascertain if rookie Cam Robinson is a capable option on Blake Bortles' blind side.

Albert was the 15th overall pick by Kansas City in 2008.

Given that Albert is also scheduled to make $8.9 million in 2017, the total sum of bonus money and salary was likely too much to walk away from.

The Miami Dolphins returned a 2018 seventh-round pick to the Jaguars upon his retirement. General manager Dave Caldwell, however, said in April that the Jags were not reworking Albert's deal.

Albert, who was traded to Jacksonville in March, announced his retirement last Monday after just three days of training camp with Jacksonville.

On an off day July 30 Albert talked with a teammate about the upcoming 2017 season, but the next day arrived at camp and told Doug Marrone the head coach that he made a decision to retire. The Jaguars quickly turned to the next man up, Robinson, although the procedural move was to place the veteran on the exempt/left team list, which gave Albert a five-day window to return.

Albert has asked to return to the team the Associated Press reported Monday night.

Coughlin's full answer: "Reserve/retired".
