Farah exits grand stage with a silver lining

Mo Farah

Muktar Edris of Ethiopia has broken the hold of Mo Farah on long-distance running, outkicking the Briton over the final 200 meters to win the 5,000 meters at the World Athletic Championships in London.

The four-time Olympic champion failed to mount a third defence of the 5000m as Ethiopia's Muktar Edris claimed gold in London on Saturday.

The 34-year-old Farah was momentarily demoted to fourth place but as Edris held on for a momentous victory in 13.32.79, he dug as deep as he could to pip Chelimo on the line and finish with silver in 13.33.22, before he was left on the track exhausted and heartbroken.

2005 marathon world champion Paul Radcliffe: "Mo Farah just doesn't have the pace in his legs anymore to be able to live with challengers like that but this isn't the end of Mo Farah in athletics".

"The 10,000m took a lot more out of me than I realised", said Farah.

Chelimo, a native of Kenya who now lives in OR and is a member of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete program, finished in 13:33.30.

"For me, it's not Mo Farah - and that's not to do a disservice to Mo, who is one of the greats of all time".

"I gave it my all, 110 percent", said Farah.

"It's been a long journey but it's been incredible", Farah added.

Britain's men won a stunning 4x100m relay gold as the women took silver.

"Tactically, I was trying to cover every move and they [Edris and Ethiopian team-mate Yomif Kejelcha] had a gameplan".

"I have a few more races on the track, then I will take a short break and then this chapter of my life is closed". It doesn't quite sink in until you compete here and cross the line - I had a couple of minutes to myself - that this is it. "I did the Mobot out of respect as well for him". "I got boxed-in early on - it doesn't normally happen - and couldn't get out".

"One of them was going to sacrifice themselves and that's what they did tonight".
