Facebook launches YouTube competitor called Watch

Facebook launches original video content in redesigned Watch tab

Facebook is beefing up its video offerings again with the new "Watch" platform, which could have implications for how travel agents market themselves on the social network.

"The newsfeed, which [catered to] autoplay without sound, created this ecosystem of videos that are really different from what most video producers made before Facebook came along with their algorithm", said Solana Pyne, the executive video producer for publisher Quartz. They also mentioned these possible features that are included in Watch; shows that engage fans and community, live shows that connect directly with fans, shows that follow a narrative arc or have a consistent theme and Live events that bring communities together. Danker described Watch as a way for publishers and content creators to find an audience and earn money along the way, presumably by advertising revenue, similar to YouTube content providers.

"Facebook has been unable to get more than 30% of their audiences to surpass 2-second viewability", said Fielde Garthwaite, co-founder and CEO of the TV analytics platform Iris.TV.

Facebook says the Watch tab will feature content created to "engage fans and community", including videos from popular vloggers and online personalities. The two companies have been communicating with each other via Facebook Messenger and G-Chat.

Facebook has also signed a deal with Major League Baseball to broadcast one live game per week.

The clip, which features the most impressive user-submitted clips of 2017 so far, was posted on July 28 and has already amassed a whopping 351 million views on Facebook - and roughly 1 million views on YouTube.

Facebook also admitted that they had funded some of the original shows as examples, but clearly stated that these are only a small percentage of all the available shows. While still available, this platform is geared more fore generic videos that users share on their News Feeds. "Facebook is the opposite experience of TV - it's quick, meandering and reactive, whereas TV and premium video in general are [more passive] and watched with clearer intent at a longer duration". There will also be several categories like the "Most Talked About", which contains list of shows that have sparked the conversation, then there is "What's Making People Laugh", section which includes shows where many people have used the "Haha" reaction, and "What Friends Are Watching", which helps you connect with friends about shows they too are following.

Up until now, Facebook users have just been viewing Facebook Live streams, videos shared by friends, and original video series that appear on news feeds and the mobile app's video tab, which actually account for average of 100 million hours of video on the platform every day. Facebook has said that it is introducing the platform to a limited group of publishers in the U.S. He said that watching a show does not have to be passive. Let us know in the comment section below!
