BMW Plows Into Group Of French Soldiers In Suspected Terror Attack

Paris attack

Soldiers secure the street near the scene where French soldiers were hit and injured by a vehicle in the western Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret, France, August 9, 2017.

Law enforcement said several eyewitnesses reported seeing the vehicle careen toward soldiers exiting a building near military barracks. "Search underway for vehicle".

The driver of the vehicle died in the attempted attack on the famous Paris avenue, which was the scene of two terror attacks in the space of three months.

The soldiers targeted in Wednesday's incident were part of Operation Sentinel - a nationwide security operation aimed at "protecting against and dissuading" attacks on French soil.

Levallois-Perret is about 3 miles from city center landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Elysee Presidential Palace.

'It all happened very quickly.

At least two soldiers who were seriously injured are now in a military hospital, according to the government of Levallois-Perret, northwest of the center of Paris. Quoting unnamed police officials, however, the AP said a man was arrested at one stop.

It was driven slowly until it came within 5m of the patrol before accelerating towards them, he said.

In February a man was shot outside the Louvre after he attacked a soldier guarding the art gallery with a machete, injuring him.

Another was arrested peacefully after police stopped several cars matching the description of the BMW used in the attack.

"I heard a loud sound, shouts".

Police have been more cautious about assigning a motive, saying only that the driver appeared to have acted deliberately. The counterterrorism department of the Paris Prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the attack on soldiers in a Paris suburb, the Agence France Presse news agency reported.

Gerard Collomb, France's minister of the interior, has called the ambush a "deliberate act".

Half a dozen soldiers were wounded in the incident that took place in front of the barracks, where a 50-member detachment of Operation Sentinelle - set up after the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris - was stationed.

In June, a 40-year-old Algeria doctorate student who had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) attacked a policeman with a hammer outside Notre Dame cathedral.
