Vatican Children's Hospital Offers to Treat Charlie Gard, Blocked for 'Legal Reasons'

Great Ormond Street Hospital in London

Gard and Yates then filed a request with the European Court of Human Rights, an global court based in Strasbourg, France, to consider the case, but the judges there also ruled in favor of his doctors. The life support he is receiving at a London hospital soon will be turned off over the objections of his parents, Chris Gard ad Connie Yates, who want to take him to the United States for experimental therapy they believe could prolong his life.

Rare-disease specialists at Vatican-owned Rome children's hospital Bambino Gesù are working with other global experts to map out an experimental treatment protocol for Charlie, hospital chief Mariella Enoc said.

Charlie's continuous struggle for life and his parents' desperate plight took the internet by storm, and several people voiced their support for the baby.

The Bambino Gesu Hospital in Rome said in its statement that they offered to keep Charlie on life support and allow his parents to decide "how to handle" switching off life support and when to do it.

The family's local MP, Labour's Seema Malhotra, used PMQs to say that while the chances of the USA treatment helping Charlie were low, doctors could say within three months whether he was responding.

The latest development in the tragic case comes as the 10-month-old boy was also offered treatment at the Vatican's own children's hospital in Rome.

Both Pope Francis and President Trump have spoken out in defense of the parents of gravely ill Charlie Gard to seek out new treatment. But the European Court of Human Rights refused to intervene last week.

In the United Kingdom doctors have the final say on the treatment of a patient and if they feel it is in their best interests while in Italy the family of the patient have the final say. "For this he prays that their wish to accompany and treat their child until the end is not neglected".

The Pope tweeted his support for Charlie on Monday.

Chris Gard and Charlotte Yates have raised millions in order to try a last-chance treatment in the US which could potentially save their son. In other words, the hospital is legally justified in removing the child from life support so that he is no longer suffering.

Charlie's plight has touched people around the world and the family have received donations totalling more than £1.3 million to take him to the U.S. for therapy. There is now no known cure, but other children born with similar types of conditions are being successfully treated with the nucleoside therapy that Charlie's parents want to try.

"This was a decision about what is best for this child", said Claire Fenton-Glynn, an academic at the University of Cambridge who studies children's rights. After they had spoken, Enoc reached the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, and she said the London hospital was very kind and thanked her for her interest, but confirmed that for legal causes, it would be impossible to transfer Charlie to their care.

The Vatican has weighed in, saying "we must do what advances the health of the patient, but we must also accept the limits of medicine" and "avoid aggressive medical procedures that are disproportionate to any expected results or excessively burdensome to the patient or the family".
