Unrest as Venezuelan Constitution Rewrite Nears

Venezuela defies Trump says vote for constitution body going ahead

Sunday's opposition vote was a strong but not overwhelming showing that fell short of the opposition's 7.7 million-vote showing in 2015 legislative elections and the 7.5 million votes that brought Maduro to power in 2013.

The almost 7.2 million votes "confirmed the reason why Maduro is afraid of elections that are mandated by our constitution", National Assembly President Julio Borges wrote on Twitter.

Recently, the Colombian president, Juan Manuel Santos, who has worked closely with the U.S. state department and Venezuela, asked Cuba's Raul Castro, a close ally of Maduro, to intervene in the conflict.

"I'm calling on the Opposition to return to peace, to respect for the Constitution, to sit and talk", he said on television. "This vote was made with 14,000 polling stations, when in a normal election there are 45,000", he said at the end of the day.

Five former Latin American presidents - from Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico and two from Costa Rica - were also in Venezuela at the invitation of the opposition to observe the vote.

The questions were approved by the National Assembly (Congress), which is controlled by an opposition majority, with a view to having a popular endorsement of its next actions against the Government.

When asked if the European Union will explore sanctions against Venezuelan leaders, Mogherini echoed the Spanish foreign affairs minister that defended "specific" and "selective" sanctions against "individual" leaders in Venezuela if the elections to the Constituent Assembly are held.

To voice deep misgivings about the deteriorating state of affairs, Venezuela's opposition leaders staged a symbolic poll in voting booths across the country.

Fox said he left Venezuela as planned Monday and hadn't been personally notified of any action by the Venezuelan government.

Late Sunday, the prosecutor-general issued a statement stating that a shooting at the town of Catia had killed the 61-year-old Xiomara Scott and three others outside a voting center.

Still, some supporters said they were disappointed.

Clashes between protesters and police have left at least 93 people dead, 1,500 wounded and more than 500 behind bars. The country's chief prosecutor has recently broken with the ruling party.

The opposition released only turnout numbers Sunday night, not tallies of responses, although virtually all who voted were believed to have answered "yes" to the central rejection of the constitutional rewrite.

"One particular thing that makes this act unlawful is that they never consulted with the people if they people want to change the constitution". Nearly all of the answers were related to the "yes" "He said when confirming the voters' rejection of the Constituent Assembly".

Opponents of Venezuela's government blame it for turning one of the region's most prosperous countries into an economic basket case with a shrinking economy, soaring inflation and widespread shortages.

Chavez and Maduro spent years building a cozy relationship with military leaders, rewarding them with money and powerful government jobs.
