United States has apologised for Taiwan name gaffe: China

Xi Jinping urges BRICS to push for peaceful settlement of regional disputes

The United States has apparently apologized to China following an embarrassing gaffe made over the weekend at the G20 summit with an official White House transcript referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping as "President Xi of the Republic of China".

While no note was made about the correction in the transcript, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular press conference in Beijing on Monday that the USA had admitted to China that it had made a "technical error and had fixed it" after Beijing asked for an explanation. Communist China, led by Xi, is called the People's Republic of China. Tsai Ing-wen is the strongest woman politician in the region.

Trump hailed his "wonderful relationship" with Xi and expressed confidence in "success" in addressing common problems, together with China, according to the White House. China considers Taiwan - which has its own separate head of state - one of its territories, and does not recognize its sovereignty, as is the case with most countries in the world which maintain limited diplomatic relations with the island. And another White House statement called the prime minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, "President Abe of Japan".

Its "One China" policy requires other countries to avoid formal diplomatic recognition of Taiwan, most recently leading Panama, one of Taiwan's few remaining allies, to cut ties with Taipei last month.

Although Trump reaffirmed his commitment to the policy during a call with Xi in February, the Republican had previously breached diplomatic protocol by speaking to Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in December past year, soon after his historic win in the November US elections.

The gaffe has gone largely unreported in China because the local media have no motivation to mock Trump, Shi said.

Trump stated that China is a significant trade partner of the USA and believed that the two countries have made good progress when it comes to the development of bilateral relations. His White House staff, in particular, has been faulted for poor organisation.
