Scaramucci suggests Trump may veto bipartisan Russian sanctions

U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will come face-to-face this week at the G20 summit in Germany

When House leadership took up the bill, they added additional sanctions on Iran and North Korea.

He noted that the election of a US president has nothing to do with Russian Federation and it is not Russia's business to evaluate what the USA president does. -Russian relations, which deteriorated under former President Barack Obama.

The legislation all but dashes Mr Trump's hopes for warmer ties with Moscow as his administration is dogged by congressional and special counsel investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 United States presidential election. Trump denies any collusion between his campaign and Moscow.

The House overwhelmingly backed the bill, 419-3, and the Senate rapidly following their lead on a 98-2 vote. The strong bipartisan support for the bill was a sharp contrast to the bitter partisan rancour during debate over how to overhaul the U.S. healthcare system.

By signing the bill into law, Trump cannot ease the sanctions against Russian Federation unless he seeks congressional approval. It is, however, expected to garner enough support to override a Trump veto.

Instead of looking for way to retaliate against Moscow, Trump openly challenged the findings of his own intelligence agencies, which concluded Russian Federation had interfered with the intention of tipping the election in his behalf.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly denied the conclusions of U.S. intelligence agencies that Moscow interfered using cyber warfare methods. Legislators said they also made adjustments so the sanctions on Russia's energy sector did not affect the ability of USA allies in Europe to get access to oil and gas resources outside of Russian Federation.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says in a statement that Trump read early drafts of the bill and "negotiated regarding critical elements of it".

But Trump could still veto the pending legislation, White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci told CNN on Thursday.

"I can not imagine anybody is seriously thinking about vetoing this bill", said Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Two administration officials say that Trump is likely to sign the bill, despite ongoing wrangling over language and bureaucracy.

Russian Federation on Friday responded to new sanctions proposed by U.S. legislators by ordering Washington to reduce its diplomatic staff.

It said in a statement that the decision by Congress to impose new sanctions confirmed "the extreme aggression of the United States in global affairs". Germany's foreign minister said his country wouldn't accept the USA sanctions against Russian Federation being applied to European companies.

It's unclear if Trump plans to sign the bill, but it passed with veto-proof majorities in both chambers.

"We propose to the USA side to bring the number of diplomatic and technical staff" working in Russia "in exact accordance" with the number of Russian diplomats and support staff in the United States by September 1, the ministry said.

Putin, speaking on a visit to Finland, was commenting on a vote by the U.S. House of Representatives which on Tuesday made a decision to impose new sanctions on Moscow and to force President Donald Trump to obtain lawmakers' permission before easing any sanctions on Russian Federation.

"This goes beyond all reasonable bounds", said Putin. They fear the new sanctions could hinder key energy projects in Europe and further inflame internal European Union divisions.
