England invested in future potential with three debutants at The Oval but closed day one in debt to an old favourite as former captain Alastair Cook bailed them out against South Africa.

Alastair Cook is bereft of the captaincy these days, of course, after his winter resignation.

"It was a pitch offered something if they put it in the right area". You will get bitten.

This was also a good day for Root who demonstrated a firm but instinctive touch in taking Jimmy Anderson off after just three overs of the new ball at the start of the Proteas reply and replacing him with Roland-Jones to such effect.

Philander struggled with a stomach bug throughout the day, but showed signs of improving health towards the close of play. "He's England's leading runs scorer", said Westley.

Malan, who went to school in South Africa, was removed by a late swinging yorker from Rabada. It wasn't pretty, but it was hugely satisfying.

After his 8 and 33 at Lord's, followed by 0 and 3 at Trent Bridge, he needed a score here.

It's Vernon Philander's bowling analysis after his opening spell at The Oval on Thursday. Stokes, who had taken 57 balls to move from 50 to 70, had moved to 91 by then but had only James Anderson left for company once Broad was dismissed.

"When it comes to game time, there is going to be pressure to perform, but it's something I'm looking forward to and testing myself at that level". He took twelve off Morris' first over of the morning and his half-century came off 73 balls.

"I'm passionate about the England team and I get frustrated when I see a team with so much talent".

Remember, Haseeb Hameed, England's other success story from the winter, was left out because of his domestic form.

England could have picked another spinner instead but Liam Dawson hasn't been great shakes so far and they are clearly not happy with Adil Rashid, albeit that he got the majority of the wickets in India and Bangladesh, and view him as exclusively a white-ball cricketer going forward. Westley scored 25 of those.

"But I don't think it was a bad wicket for the batsmen either".

Westley may have to straighten his technique - he was slightly turned around giving the edge that led to his dismissal - but, for a first knock in hard circumstance, it was OK. It's just in the game it gets competitive and there is a history that sparks that.

Cook was 72 not out, but the inexperience of Keaton Jennings and debutants Tom Westley and Dawid Malan showed as they could only muster 26 runs between them.

It was a fantastic piece of bowling, with pace and swing leaving Malan on the turf.

That was pretty much down to the reliable Alistair Cook.

Cook started the morning by hitting the fourth ball he faced from Morne Morkel for four and leapfrogging Australian great Allan Border into ninth position on the list of all-time Test runscorers.

He dug deep and enjoyed the challenge.
