Germany: Knife attack in Hamburg supermarket kills one

One dead and several injured by knifeman in busy Hamburg supermarket

A man who said he witnessed the attack said the suspect stabbed at least three people and shouted "Allahu Akbar".

Police said the attacker's motive is unclear but he appears to have acted alone.

The incident occurred in a supermarket in the German city, according to reports.

The assailant entered the supermarket and stabbed one person, who died at the scene, before fleeing the scene.

Police say they don't have any information yet on the man's motive. Photos and videos showed a large number of emergency services, including a helicopter and heavily-armed police officers, at the scene.

On December 16, 2016, a Tunisian hijacked a truck, driving it into a crowd shopping at a Christmas market in the German capital, Berlin, in an act of terror that left 12 people dead.

More than one million asylum seekers have arrived in Germany since Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the country's borders in 2015.

The miscreant soon after the attack reportedly escaped but was later nabbed by the police.

Authorities were also investigating an IS claim of the stabbing death of a teenage boy in Hamburg last October.

The attacker has been arrested, Efe news reported.
