Charlie Gard: Treatment can prolong life, Dr. Marc Siegel says

UK court hearing begins for terminally ill baby

Parents of Charlie Gard, Connie Yates and Chris Gard pose for the media ahead of delivering a petition with more than 350,000 signatures to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, Sunday, July 9, 2017. His parents want to bring him overseas for experimental therapy, which they say offers their son a chance of improvement.

He told them he wanted to know what had changed with the 11-month-old's condition and said he would make decisions on the basis of clear evidence.

Charlie Gard's parents received 48 hours to submit "new and powerful evidence" demonstrating that their 11-month-old son, who is suffering from a rare genetic disorder, should be kept alive to receive experimental treatment.

The decision came after an emotionally charged hearing in which Gard's mother wept in frustration and his father yelled at a lawyer.

Siegel said the baby was in discomfort, and while the treatment won't bring about a cure, it could potentially extend his life.

The hospital requested a review of the justice after the publication of a letter from the Bambino Gesu Hospital in the Vatican, which presented its research and recommended that the Great Ormond Street Hospital "reconsider" its position.

Whilst debating whether Charlie Gard should be allowed to travel to America to receive experimental treatment for his mitochondrial depletion syndrome, the LBC presenter said that be believes sometimes the doctors get it wrong after his brother recovered from a horrific vehicle accident. "If there is new evidence, I will hear it".

The application came after both Pope Francis and President Donald Trump fuelled global attention to the case, with hospitals in Rome and the U.S. offering to provide Charlie the experimental therapy.

There are 18 children currently on this treatment - one of them wasn't able to do anything and now she's riding a bike, she said.

It ruled the children's hospital could turn off his life support.

Speaking to the BBC before Monday's hearing, Yates said the couple had endured a "living hell" over recent months, saying "it's terrible that this decision has been taken out of our hands".

His parents have claimed that they have evidence of treatment in the USA that could save his life, though Francis has given them by 2 p.m. on Wednesday to produce the details, with another hearing scheduled for Thursday.

"Unfortunately, situations such as this, that involve withdrawing life-sustaining treatment are not uncommon and fall within the responsibilities of many paediatricians".

"I did my job", Francis said.
