Prime Minister Narendra Modi's obsession with Gujarat may prove to counter productive both for him and for India.

The state government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of those who killed in the floods.

Apart from disaster response force teams, authorities have sought help from Indian army and Air Force for relief and rescue in the affected areas of Banaskantha and Patan districts in the north of Gujarat.

Almost three days after their village Dabhipura in Dantiwada taluka of Banaskanthan was inundated in flood waters, families returned on Wednesday.

In Rajasthan, home to a number of popular tourist destinations, the streets of at least four districts have been turned into virtual rivers, trapping tens of thousands of people on the upper floors of residential buildings.

The desert state saw heavy rains in Jalore, Pali and Sirohi districts which caused inundation, leaving several people marooned.

According to the prime minister, assessment teams of the various Central ministries will be rushed to Gujarat to carry out an assessment and submit their report to enable further processing of aid. Amreli, Valsad, and Kandla have been the worst hit districts in the state as heavy rain continues for over 24 hours.

The state recorded 555.2 millimetres of rainfall, or 68.52 per cent of the average seasonal precipitation.

Gujarat Chief Minister has cancelled the weekly cabinet meeting today so that Ministers can monitor the relief and rescue works in the affected areas. They also dropped over 300 kg of food packets in the district.

A high alert has been sounded as more than 20 highways of the state got submerged.

While Dholidhaja, Vansal and Nimbam dams in Surendranagar, Machchhu-1 and Ghodadharoi in Morbi and Kankawati dam in Jamnagar districts have received up to 90 per cent of their water storage capacity.

The Odisha government has dispatched one Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) team each to the northern Keonjhar and Bhadrak districts, as the threat of floods loomed large due to the rising water level in major rivers. In Rajkot, state officials met Rupani and shared with him information about the ongoing rescue operations and their preparedness to tackle the situation.
