British Open 2017: Australian Andrew Dodt secures last available place

Ian Poulter

From just off the green, he rolled a putt to 4 feet and left his par putt two inches short.

Frenchman Matthieu Pavon (66) finished third on 10 under par to secure the second of three spots into The Open.

The trio are two shots clear of Andy Sullivan, who made the day's biggest move at the top thanks to a superb 67. His missed putt from five feet away rather indicated what would happen next.

Spain's Rafa Cabrera-Bello had finished his tournament earlier in the day, having carded a course record 64 to set a clubhouse target of 13-under-par.

Cabrera-Bello is therefore worthy of more Open attention than would ordinarily have been the case.

Cabrera Bello is the first Spanish victor of the Scottish Open, and follows Alex Noren (BMW PGA Championship), Tommy Fleetwood (HNA Open de France) and his compatriot Jon Rahm (Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation) as a Rolex Series champion.

Padraig Harrington will return to Birkdale, where he won the 2008 Open, in fine spirits after a Sunday 66.

Another three South Koreans, world number one Ryu So-yeon (71), Lee Mi-rim (67) and Lee Jeong-eun (73), were another stroke back at five-under.

Ian Poulter encountered trouble on the greens early in his fourth round and failed to find momentum thereafter.

Queenslander Andrew Dodt's consistent play on the European Tour has been rewarded with a spot in The 146th Open at Royal Birkdale, the first Major appearance in his career.

Rachel Dodt arrived from Sydney and into a rain and windswept Glasgow Airport on Saturday morning but packed for a five-day holiday in summery NY, and a last holiday trip overseas Dodt revealed ahead of the couple intending to start a family.

"No. 12 was about as tough as I've ever seen in terms of wind and rain", Poulter said, holding a cup of tea to warm his hands. "The long game hasn't been in good shape for a long time".

"I played some of the best golf of my life in that final round and that 3-wood in the play-off qualifies as one of the best shots of my life", said a jubilant Cabrera-Bello, who was afforded a decent chunk of good fortune from the golfing gods during regulation play when his second shot to the 18th hit one side of the burn and bounced safely over to the other side.

"So, really, really happy how I played today". While not making a hole-in-one hurts, we supposed this isn't the worst way to save par. "I think that was a valuable experience, precious experience for me". The Northern Irishman missed the cut, meaning a weekend spent at the Open venue.

"Rachel and I were meant to be off to NY tomorrow morning, but pretty happy to be going to Birkdale and my first major", he said.
