Bill Belichick on CTE study: 'I'm not really a medical expert'

CTE found in 99% of studied brains from deceased NFL players

The more advanced the player was, the more likely they are to be diagnosed with CTE and the more severe the disease is likely to be. National Football League players made up 111 of the brains studied, and 110 were found to have CTE. Combat veterans and athletes in rough contact sports like football and boxing are among those thought to be most at risk.

"Well, again, there are a lot of studies out there", he said.

Dr. McKee and her colleagues at CTE Center at Boston University and VA Boston Healthcare System, received the former players' brains through a research donation program that their families elected to participate in.

He says this does not mean the majority of athletes who play football, including the NFL, are destined to have CTE.

More players living in the fog of memory loss, hallucinations and unpredictable mood swings are requesting that their brains be donated to science. The disease is linked to repeated head trauma.

Would you let your kids play football? Researchers noted that the most common cause of death for study participants with mild CTE was suicide (27 percent).

The NFL responded to the new research in a statement reading in part, "The medical and scientific communities will benefit from this publication and the NFL will continue to work with a wide range of experts to improve the health of current and former NFL athletes". Wainright died in April 2016 at age 48 from a heart attack triggered by bleeding in the brain, said his wife, Stacie.

CTE is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by impaired speech, deafness, amnesia, depression, anger, and dementia.

Shepard also said he expects his 14-month-old son to grow up wanting to play football.

Last year, an NFL official acknowledged for the first time a clear link between football and CTE. "But CTE is real".

"That is one hypothesis however, what we don't know is if this tau protein is really the problem or if it represents the brain trying to heal, out of a response of trying to actually do something positive but going awry due to multiple injuries", Cardenas said.

The researchers said that the severity of CTE symptoms seemed to primarily be based on how long players were active in the sport, with high school players tending to have mild pathology and college, semi-professional, and professional players having severe pathology.

One early study of men who had a history of repeated concussions found that 80 percent showed evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy or other neurological disorders; most of these men had played football in high school, college or professionally.
