WannaCry attack forces Honda to halt production at Japanese plant

"We're looking at many decades of building complex systems - one on top of the other - with no effort to go back to fix what we did wrong along the way", Wendy Nather, principal security strategist at Duo Security, told CNNTech in May after WannaCry infected businesses around the world.

Honda Motor said it halted production at a domestic vehicle plant for a day this week after finding the WannaCry ransomware that struck globally last month in its computer network.

The Japanese automaker said it had shut its plant in Sayama, near Tokyo, on Monday after discovering its computer system was infected with the so-called WannaCry virus.

Honda said today that it had briefly halted operations at a vehicle plant in Sayama, Japan earlier this week because of the infamous WannaCrypt ransomware.

According to a Reuters report on June 21, Honda shut down production at its Sayama plant, where it manufactures approximately 1,000 cars a day including the Accord sedan and Odyssey minivan.

The global WannaCry attack started on 12 May and infected thousands of PCs at large institutions, including the NHS in the United Kingdom and FedEx.

Gavin Millard, Technical Director at Tenable, said that "to reduce the probability of being infected by ransomware, and more concerning a targeted attack leveraging the same vulnerabilities, continuous visibility into the vulnerability status of every asset in the modern computing environment is critical in reducing the available attack surface".

"It comes as no surprise that more and large organisations have been affected by WannaCry".

The WannaCry ransomware virus has locked up over 200,000 computers in more than 15 countries, and though the attacks have slowed down, security experts warn that newer viruses may follow.

"Companies like Honda should be aware of the tools and resources available to them to secure their networks and ensure business continuity", he added. Immediately after the WannaCry outbreak began, the Renault-Nissan Alliance - comprised of France's Renault and Japan's Nissan - announced that they'd had to temporarily halt production at some European plants.
