Uber will allow riders to tip drivers - just don't keep them waiting

Uber Adds Option to Tip Drivers

"Uber service fees are never deducted from your tips", clarifies the company's announcement to drivers.

As well as Mr Kalanick's immediate resignation, they demanded the board appoints more "truly independent directors" and that Uber hires an experienced finance chief. To start, tipping is available in Seattle, Minneapolis and Houston. The riders can basically tip their drivers a month after the ride is done.

These changes also mean some added fees for riders. The changes include: shorter cancellation windows for riders - down to two minutes from five - compensation during wait times, and a $2 "teen fare" for trips on teen accounts. Drivers will earn more for providing rides to teens who use the service. After eight years of phenomenal growth by upending the taxi business, Uber had reached a point where the free-wheeling culture that created the company had become an albatross that threatened to kill it.

The addition of a tipping option brings Uber into line with the policy of Lyft, its most significant competitor in the USA, which has included a tipping option since its inception.

Uber is adding tipping in order to improve its relationship with drivers, who have recently felt like they've been wronged.

With the new tipping feature, passengers will have the option to add a tip when rating a completed trip.

Unlike Lyft, which offers in-app tipping, drivers for Uber in the past have relied on cash to receive gratuity at the conclusion of a ride.

They will be charged by the minute if they kept an Uber auto waiting for more than two minutes and the company was reducing the time allowed to cancel a ride from five to two minutes. According to data obtained by Reuters, Lyft users have tipped drivers a total of $250-million, $100-million of which was raised between June 2016 and April 2017. "We must update our core values, listen better to employees and riders, and prioritise our drivers".

Uber has suffered in recent weeks, with company CEO and co-founder Travis Kalanick taking an indefinite leave of absence last week.

Even though Uber as a company has been rocked with scandal over the past few months, the day-to-day operations for drivers has remained steady, these drivers told us.
