Trump ponders firing Robert Mueller, but staff pushes back

Trump may ‘terminate’ Russia probe’s Mueller says president’s pal

Shortly after Robert Mueller was named special counsel in the federal Russian Federation investigation, lawmakers speculated that the congressional probes may be sidelined by the forceful new presence.

Trump has made no decision to act against Mueller and insists that he knows the risks of doing so but people close to the president say Trump is so volatile they can not be sure that he will not change his mind if he finds out anything to lead him to believe the investigation has been compromised, The New York Times said.

Barry Bennett, a GOP strategist who served as an adviser to Trump's campaign, said he believed it would be too damaging for Trump to try to remove Mueller, but that he had concerns about the appearance that the probe was being politicized.

A person close to Trump's legal team said earlier Tuesday that there have been no discussions about firing Mueller with the legal team.

Now we know why Trump wanted to fire the special counsel. Following his decision in April to give Mattis authority to decide troop levels in Iraq and Syria, Trump extended that authority to the war in Afghanistan on Tuesday, The New York Times reports.

Rosenstein is charged with Mueller's fate because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from all matters having to do with the Trump-Russia investigation. Ruddy went on PBS Monday and said, "I think [Trump is] considering perhaps terminating the special counsel".

Those in the White House have expressed concern that the probe could detract from the president's agenda for months or years to come.

"I don't think that's a question for me to answer", Rosenstein responded.

Mueller, who directed the Federal Bureau of Investigation under former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, was named to the post last month by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. "I think the way the investigation is shaping up, he's out to get the president". "On CBS This Morning former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who had initially said he was a fan of Mueller, accused him of picking politically biased investigators", she reported, as though his statement somehow belonged to Trump.

Gingrich and Ruddy said it would be a "mistake" for Trump to remove Mueller, and both said they see the probe as unnecessary. Trump allies will say it's another media-generated firestorm to sabotage their man, but the real reason is that with Trump, anything is possible.

Speculation is swirling about whether President Donald Trump will remove special counsel Robert Mueller from his post. Trump is said to be proud of yesterday's not-so-nimble refusal to pledge support to Mueller, seeing it as an artfully tactical ploy aimed at steering the investigation toward his desired outcome of total, public exoneration.

Mueller has not publicly discussed his work, and a spokesman for the special counsel declined to comment.

Coats was attending a briefing at the White House together with officials from several other government agencies.

The investigation has now gone way beyond Russian election interference.
