Scalise doctor hopes for 'excellent recovery' despite risk

Sava said that after being released from the hospital, Scalise "will require a period of healing and rehabilitation". He will need additional operations, possibly in the coming days.

The 66-year-old of Belleville, Illionis, opened fire early Wednesday morning at an Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field where GOP lawmakers were practicing for an upcoming charity baseball game. The team doesn't plan on removing them all soon: The Congressman has already undergone multiple surgeries in the last 36 hours. "We have controlled the internal bleeding, and his vital signs have stabilized", Sava said at a press conference.

"An excellent recovery is a good possibility".

Witnesses said the shooting would have been a "massacre" if not for the Capitol Police officers on duty as part of Scalise's security detail and the gunfight that ensued as local law enforcement arrived.

The attacker, who had traveled to Washington several months ago from the Midwestern state of IL, was fatally wounded by members of the Capitol Police who were in a security detail protecting Scalise. He arrived "in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Sava said, adding that now, "we are encouraged by improvement in his condition".

A congressional staffer and lobbyist were also shot, and another congressman and police officer suffered injuries.

The shooting cast a somber mood over Washington and momentarily tamped down the partisan fighting. Leaders decided the game would go on as scheduled at Nationals Park in Washington, home of the city's professional baseball team, and the Democrats won, 11 to 2. Speaking earlier Friday in Miami, Trump said Scalise "took a bullet for all of us" when he was shot.

Sava said Scalise "sustained a single rifle wound that entered into the area of the left hip".

Although Scalise was able to talk on the ballfield, by the time he was transported by helicopter to the hospital, he was in shock.

Rep. Franks says, "I have been notified there is an investigation I might be involved in".

Sava said doctors will not attempt to remove what are likely to be hundreds of bullet fragments from Scalise's body, saying the risk of such a procedure typically outweighs the potential benefits.

Hospital officials said it is hard to predict how long the congressman will be in the hospital, but that he is expected to be able to walk and hopefully run after a period of rehabilitation.
