Olympics-NBC monitors Korea tensions as it preps for Winter Games

Taeyang selected as Pyeong Chang Olympics ambassador

According to reports, South Korea sports minister Do Jong-hwan said North Korea could host some skiing events.

The announcement, made by sports minister Do Jong-hwan, is the latest in a series of olive branches waved by Seoul's new administration created to thaw relations with Kim Jong-un's regime north of the border.

But South Korea's new president Moon Jae-In suggested earlier this month that the two Koreas should apply to co-host the 2030 World Cup.

Chang said, however, he will attend discussion on the issue at the IOC level, adding IOC President Thomas Bach will soon visit South Korea to attend the closing ceremony of the World Taekwondo Championships slated for Friday of next week.

The proposal could receive criticism from the United States, which is reeling from the death of Otto Warmbier, a University of Virginia student who was arrested by North Korea in 2015 for allegedly stealing a propaganda sign during his trip to the country.

North Korean officials have reportedly declared the country's intent to take part in the Olympics after they boycotted the 1988 Summer Games in South Korea's capital Seoul.

The Olympic rings outside the Gangneung Hockey Centre in Gangneung, South Korea.

Pyongyang boycotted the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Olympics, which were both held in Seoul, but has since taken part in global sports competitions south of the border, most recently the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon.

When asked if he agreed with co-hosting in general, Chang simply said, "I only abide by the Olympic Charter". "But I am here as an International Olympic Committee member of North Korea, and representing the IOC".

A liberal candidate from the Democratic Party, Moon has pledged greater dialogue with North Korea in a bid to reduce tensions.

BIGBANG's Taeyang has officially been named as an honorary ambassador for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics!

He pledged to discuss the suggestion with the International Olympic Committee.

He insisted there are no contingency plans to move the Games should matters escalate further.
