Nabra Hassanen's Washington DC Memorial Set On Fire

The possibility that 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen was sexually assaulted during the events leading to her death is being investigated police say

Roessler said police have "absolutely no evidence" that her killing was motivated by hate, but says "that's the myth, isn't it?"

A Fairfax Police spokesperson later stressed to The Associated Press that the investigation is in its early stages, while saying that at this point, they have no indication of a link between the victim's faith and the crime. DC Police said Jonathon Soloman, 24, of SC was arrested and charged in connection with the fire. Police said the driver became enraged after exchanging words with a boy in the group.

Darwin Martinez Torres of Sterling was arraigned in Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and ordered held without bail pending a July 19 court appearance.

Authorities confirmed Nabra was subject to the violence twice before her death - once in Loudoun and once in Fairfax - and confirmed they were investigating if there was any sexual assault carried out during the two attacks. Observant Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan, and since Ramadan this year overlaps with the summer solstice, and sunrise occurs well before 6 a.m., some Muslims will eat large meals in predawn hours.

Authorities said that after the attack, Torres took Nabra in his auto to a nearby area and continued assaulting her then threw her in a pond where her body was later found.

Hassanen and a group of other teenagers were walking and biking along a road after a Ramadan event at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, ADAMS, Center, a large mosque in Sterling, when they got into a dispute with the suspect, Darwin Martinez Torres.

The teen was reported missing by her friends who scattered during the attack and could not find her afterwards. A Hassanen family spokesman said the girls in the group were wearing Muslim headscarves and robes. She said the tragedy hits home because she has a daughter Nabra's age.

Police said the quarrel intensified and Torres stopped his auto and began chasing the group with a baseball bat and assaulted Nabra.

The funeral of 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen is being held Wednesday afternoon at the mosque.

"This vile crime affects not only Nabra's family and her community in the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS), but the broader American community", says Rasha Mubarak, Central Florida regional director for CAIR-Florida, in a statement. A vigil also is planned for Wednesday in Hassanen's hometown of Reston, Virginia.
