Mourinho accused of 3.3mn euro tax fraud in Spain

Jose Mourinho during his spell as Real Madrid manager

Mr Mourinho, 54, is accused of two counts of tax fraud - €1.6m in 2011 and €1.7m in 2012.

Alongside compatriot Jose Mourinho, Ronaldo joins an elite group of soccer players, including Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano, who have been convicted of tax evasion and fraud, as wealthy sports professionals come under increased financial scrutiny.

Earlier this month Portuguese footballer and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, was accused of evading £13 million (€14.7 million) in tax between 2011 and 2014. They say that in 2010, Ronaldo set up a company to manage his image rights in the British Virgin Islands but then transferred those rights to a second company in Ireland, exclusively for the objective of creating a "screen" to confuse Spanish tax authorities.

The Premier League boss is one of many Jose Mendes clients that have been implicated in tax fraud claims uncovered by Football Leaks a year ago, with the list including Cristiano Ronaldo as well.

In 2016, Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano received a one-year suspended prison sentence for tax fraud while Barca superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar are both now awaiting court decisions.

Real Madrid was not immediately available for comment on the allegations against Mourinho or Ronaldo's hearing.

Madrid prosecutors said that after signing for the Spanish giants from Benfica in 2010, Di Maria had used companies in Panama and Ireland to hide earnings from the marketing of image rights.

Ronaldo, who played under Mourinho at the Bernabeu, has denied the charges and is threatening to leave Spain.

Ronaldo scored 42 goals in all competitions - 25 of those coming in LaLiga as Madrid claimed the league for the first time since 2012 after dethroning bitter rivals Barcelona. As in Messi's case - the Argentine was sentenced to 21 months for three cases of tax fraud arising from his image rights - sentences under two years are suspended.
