Hundreds Evacuated From London Towers as Fire Fallout Widens

The Latest: UK update: 27 high-rises have dangerous cladding

Five London tower blocks containing 800 homes were being immediately evacuated on Friday due to fire safety concerns over their external cladding following the deadly Grenfell Tower inferno, the local authority said.

Camden Council discovered fire safety defects in Chalcots estate blocks yesterday, which along with the discovery of risky cladding similar to that installed on Grenfell Tower, led an estimated 4,000 people to be evacuated from more than 700 homes last night with little or no notice.

Councilmembers for the London borough of Camden say it was the stark memory of the Grenfell blaze, which killed at least 79 people earlier this month, that spurred them to act.

"It's absolutely disgusting", asking why the decision had been left so late in the day.

Gould said 83 residents in the evacuated flats had refused to leave their flats but the council warned that any residents refusing to leave their homes would be forcefully evacuated due to fire safety concerns.

To encourage cooperation, Prime Minister Theresa May said the Government would not penalise any fire survivors who were in the country illegally. "If I'm there for weeks I don't know how I'm going to deal with it".

Six emails sent by and to an Arconic Inc (ARNC.N) sales manager raise questions about why the company supplied combustible cladding to a distributor for use at Grenfell Tower, despite publicly warning such panels were a fire risk for tall buildings.

The council said it could take two to four weeks for the four blocks to be made safe.

Pilgrim Tucker, an organiser working with Grenfell Action Group and in contact with residents at the hotel said: "It's beyond disgusting that after all these people have been through - losing their neighbours and watching their homes burn to the ground - authorities are prepared to tell them that they have hours to pick up their bags and move to some unknown destination, separated from their friends and neighbours".

Ms Davidson said she was rescued from an earlier fire at Taplow in 2012 by crews from Belsize fire station.

Carl McDowell, 31, said he took one look at the packed inflatable beds offered in the center's gym and went back to his own apartment.

Grenfell Tower, in west London, had undergone an 8.7 million pound ($11 million) refurbishment that was completed in 2016, but residents of the more than 120 apartments had complained about its fire safety. "You don't get everyone to leave this quickly", 21-year-old Daniel Tackaberry told Reuters outside a nearby sports centre where the local council had laid out air beds for people for whom they could not find hotels.

"Where do they think we're all going?"

Government officials in London revealed Saturday that cladding on 27 high rise residential tower blocks have failed safety tests.

The Metropolitan Police said cladding attached to the 24-story Grenfell public housing project during a recent renovation failed safety tests conducted by investigators.

The government has ordered an immediate examination of the refrigerator model that started the blaze.

"Words can not express our sorrow at this bad tragedy", Whirlpool said in a statement.

The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) later confirmed that the polyethylene filling between the two Reynobond aluminium panels did not pass building regulations for tower blocks over 59 feet and a flame retardant material should have been used instead.

Flammable external cladding that is widely used to provide insulation and enhance the appearance of buildings has been identified as the culprit in the Grenfell disaster. One hotel chain, Premier Inn, has calling in experts to check its buildings.
