Clinging on to her job, Britain's May appoints new ministers

UK Voters Reject Prime Minister May's Vision of 'Hard Brexit'

John Redwood, a senior Conservative, disputes the claim, arguing the result did not mean there should be any softening in a hard divorce from Europe, noting that Labour, the second largest party, also endorsed Brexit in its election manifesto.

Instead, voters stripped the Conservatives of their parliamentary majority. This would so undermine May's authority, I anticipated, that she would have to resign.

While always striving for the "best deal" for Northern Ireland and its people, she said her party would always have the best interests of the United Kingdom at heart. But Johnson said he backed May.

Ms May, 60, has presented herself as uniquely qualified for European Union divorce talks starting on June 19 and said her 68-year-old rival would be "alone and naked in the negotiating chamber".

Gavin Barwell was named new chief of staff. And the party has a duty to fulfil this commitment to the 42% of the electorate who voted for the Conservatives and certainty. But Britain's Saturday newspapers agreed she is just clinging on.

To be sure, by last month, I had come around to the conventional wisdom that May's Conservatives would win.

Corbyn said Labour would try to amend the Queen's Speech to include its own commitments to end austerity and boost public spending.

"Honestly, it feels nearly like she is nearly not aware of what has happened in the last 24 hours", Conservative lawmaker Heidi Allen told LBC radio.

Britain voted to leave the European Union in a June 2016 referendum.

(CNN) Five days before Election Day in the United Kingdom, a group of terrorists, linked to ISIS, launched an attack in the heart of London, killing eight people and wounding dozens.

The pound fell as low as $1.2636 from $1.2955 on Thursday, before recovering slightly to trade at $1.2737.

After confirming yesterday that her top five ministers would keep their jobs, including finance minister Philip Hammond, May is expected to continue to appoint the government that will take on one of the most demanding negotiations in British history. Exports of goods and services account for about 27 per cent of the British economy, with nearly half of exports going to the EU.

"We don't know when Brexit talks start", Tusk posted on Twitter.

"I don't see how she can be a strong and credible figure now to lead these negotiations", he said.

Leftist opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, whose Labour party surged from 20 points behind in the opinion polls, has told May to quit after she "lost votes, lost support and lost confidence".

"It is necessary to carry out a dialogue with Britain by showing firmness and determination..." It was not what was said publicly or not said, but the lack of support and the silence from fellow Tory party leaders, an indication that all is not well. Former Conservative cabinet minister Owen Paterson, asked about her future, said: "Let's see how it pans out".

"The arguments the Conservative Party put forward in this election have lost, and we need to change", he said, adding that Ms.

Mr Corbyn, a veteran socialist who has never held ministerial office and defied the odds to win the Labour leadership two years ago, pledged he would "lead a government you can rely on".

The alliance makes some modernizing Conservatives uneasy. Labour surpassed expectations by winning 262.

Its eurosceptic wing has always been a thorn in the side of Conservative prime ministers.

All this confirms a sense that, Brexit or no Brexit, Britain is madly adrift. The Scottish National Party, which lost 21 of its 56 Westminster seats, also saw its vote share in Scotland plummet dramatically-from 50 to 36.9 percent.

She has said she favours retaining the greatest possible level of access to Europe's single market.

Referring to the "strong relationship" she had with the DUP, but giving little detail of how their arrangement might work, she said the government would "guide the country through the crucial Brexit talks" that begin in just 10 days' time.
